
August 9, 2017: Senator the Honourable Dennis Moses, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs welcomed to Trinidad and Tobago Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and Sahel (UNOWAS) during a Courtesy Call on 31st July, 2017 at the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs. Dr. Chambas who visited Trinidad and Tobago as the chief guest for the Emancipation Support Committee’s Emancipation Celebrations for 2017, was accompanied by Mr. Ahmed El Basheer, Director of Citizens and Diaspora Directorate, African Union and Mr. Kafra Kambon, Chairman, Emancipation Support Committee of Trinidad and Tobago at the meeting.
Recalling the long standing linkages between Africa and Trinidad and Tobago, including past high-level visits that took place on the occasion of Emancipation Day, Dr. Chambas reiterated the need for Africa and Trinidad and Tobago to build bridges and develop concrete linkages. He identified key areas including energy, tourism, education and culture as prime sectors for cooperation. Dr. Chambas also highlighted the need for cooperation between CARICOM and the African Union.
Welcoming the interest in renewing ties between Trinidad and Tobago and Africa, Minister Moses reflected on Trinidad and Tobago’s long and deep history with the African continent and with individual African countries. The Minister further noted the potential for deeper cooperation between Trinidad and Tobago and countries on the African continent and the need for a structured approach in achieving the gains of closer ties.
