April 19, 2016: Autistic people are often stigmatised, especially when others do not understand the condition.
Together, Autism Tobago and the Scarborough Library Facility are working to increase autism awareness across the island. April is Autism Awareness Month and the organisations have planned activities geared at public education.
The events include an autism display and a lecture entitles “Autism and Youth: Strategies for Families Living With Autism”, both hosted at the Library Facility.
Chairman of Autism Tobago, Tenielle Graham said sometimes autistic children are looked at as having bad behaviour by persons who don’t understand the condition.
“We just hope that people have a better understanding of what it is to be autistic (through the information we provide),” Graham said. “I want when people come and they are in the lecture, that they will have an understanding of what autistic people go through on a daily basis.”
She hopes that educating the public will improve people’s attitudes towards those affected by autism.
