Repairs to address major sewer related issues at the St. Benedict’s College have been completed and there will be full resumption of classes on Monday 12th March, 2018.
The sewer system at the College malfunctioned on February 15th, 2018, resulting in untreated sewer flowing into the roadside drain. This prompted the Public Health Inspectors to close the institution.
The Ministry of Education subsequently approved funding for the Education Facilities Company Limited (EFCL) to tender the project for a contractor to reconstruct the soak away. The contractor also pumped out and cleaned the septic tank and installed new sewer lines and did other minor repairs.
Principal of St. Benedict College, Ann Gomes-Phillips says the contractor sanitised the entire College compound on Friday 9th March, 2018 and officials from the Office of County Medical Officer of Health have visited the College and advised that it is safe for students and staff to return to the compound.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education has granted approval for major repairs at the Carapichaima East Secondary School. The contractor commenced works on Thursday 8th March, 2018 to demolish and replace the roof and ceiling of the Assembly Hall and Technical Block O. The repairs will address a pigeon infestation problem which resulted in the closure of the school.
