Dr. Victor Wheeler, Medical Chief of Staff of the SGH, delivers the Opening Remarks at a Thanksgiving Service to mark International Midwives Day on May 4th, 2018

Scarborough, Tobago – May 7th, 2018):  Blessings upon blessings flowed at the Thanksgiving Interfaith Service for Midwives of the Tobago Regional Health Authority (TRHA) held on Friday, 4th May, 2018 at the Scarborough General Hospital (SGH).

The event was part of International Midwives Day celebrations which recognize the role that Midwives play in supporting, caring for and advising women during pregnancy, labour and the postpartum period, and ultimately bringing life into the world.

In his Opening Remarks, Dr. Victor Wheeler, Medical Chief of Staff, said he was pleased that promises made a year ago were delivered.

“There is now greater harmony among staff in the Maternity department.  There is now a closer working relationship between midwives and doctors.  There is now collaboration taking place and there are joint updates for training taking place.  I would like to thank Midwife and Head Nurse of the Maternity Ward, Audrey George, for contributing to these improved conditions,” he said.

Councillor Dr. Agatha Carrington, Secretary of Health Wellness and Family Development, though otherwise engaged, leveraged the technology and joined the celebrations remotely to thank the Midwives for their contribution to society.

“As we seek to improve the quality of care in our Hospital, as we seek to change the world one patient at a time, you are, in fact, contributing to a lifetime of good health for each patient, each citizen.  I want to express my immense gratitude to our Midwives for the yeoman’s service they continue to deliver at the Scarborough General Hospital and, indeed, the service given to humanity,” said Dr. Carrington.

Greetings and commendations also came from Ms. Ingrid Melville, Deputy Chair and CEO (Ag.) of the TRHA.

“To the midwives who work on the cusp of life, who assist us women at that most difficult stage of our existence, we bring honour and praise on to you.  As a young mother, it was a midwife who taught me all that I needed to know in terms of care for my first two newborns.  They were the only ones present.  The strides that we are making in this area of healthcare is, in itself, a tribute to the work and the excellence of the team of Midwives at the SGH,” stated Ms. Melville who also praised and thanked Nurse George, for the leadership that she provides to the team.

A presentation by Dr. Leslie Bishop, Senior Medical Officer - Obstetrics and Gynecology, greetings, scripture readings, prayers from Faith-based organizations and songs of praise punctuated the programme, as well as testimonials from patients about their experiences with Midwives, which filled the room with love and laughter throughout the Service.
