Efforts are underway to reinforce Trinidad and Tobago’s security relations with the United Kingdom following a courtesy call to Minister of National Security the Honourable Stuart Young by British High Commissioner to Trinidad and Tobago His Excellency Tim Stew.
Minister Young welcomed the opportunity to meet with His Excellency Tim Stew to further strengthen the historical high level of collaboration and cooperation between the Governments of Trinidad and Tobago and the United Kingdom (UK).
The British High Commissioner congratulated Minister Young on his appointment as Minister of National Security and also expressed his hope to build on the already solid ties between both countries, noting the UK’s commitment to strengthening bilateral security co-operation.
Matters discussed at the meeting included continued collaboration established under a November 2017 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between both countries; sharing of best practices in international security; and further capacity building initiatives for national security officials.
The Minister reaffirmed this Government’s commitment to the operationalization of the MOU. He reiterated that Trinidad and Tobago remains committed in its fight against trafficking in drugs, firearms and persons; corruption; terrorism in all its forms; as well as cybercrime; and is working steadily towards the improvement of this country’s law enforcement and criminal justice sectors.
High Commissioner Stew emphasised his country’s commitment to working closely with Trinidad and Tobago to tackle shared challenges, such as transnational crime, corruption, terrorism and violent extremism. The courtesy call took place today Friday 17th August, 2018.
