Ministry of Health hosts maternal and child improvement programme

The Ministry of Health’s Directorate of Women’s Health in collaboration with the Caribbean Regional Midwives Association (CRMA) and the USAID’s Maternal and Child Survival Programme hosted a Maternal and Child Improvement Programme at the Trinidad Hilton from September 25th, 2018 to September 27th, 2018.

Over thirty (30) stakeholders from both the private and public health sectors participated in the programme which highlighted techniques to reduce maternal and infant mortality in the region, such as the Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) and Breastfeeding Techniques. These techniques improve early outcomes for premature infants and enhance overall early infant care.

Additionally, resuscitation models, training kits and breastfeeding simulators were donated to the Ministry of Health, which will be used for training at the Regional Health Authorities.

Globally, over 75 % of infant deaths occur in the first week of life. This activity is but one initiative implemented to improve maternal and child health in Trinidad and Tobago.

The Ministry of Health remains committed to improving maternal and child health care through staff training and policy related interventions as we work towards a Healthy Me, Healthy You and a Healthy T&T.
