The Honourable Shamfa Cudjoe, Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs accompanied by Mr Patrice Charles, Director of Physical Education and Sport received a courtesy call from national cyclist Teneil Campbell and Mr Alexander Smith, Operations Manager for the Perfection Services Limited (PSL) Cycling Club, yesterday, Tuesday October 16, at the Parliament Building, Wrightson Road, Port of Spain.
During the visit, Minister Cudjoe congratulated Ms Campbell on her most recent accomplishments on the track and took the opportunity to present her with a cheque, in recognition of her accomplishments at the CAC games. This cheque forms part of the Rewards and Incentives Framework of the recently launched National Policy on Sport, which will see many of our athletes who medaled at international competitions, being rewarded for their accomplishment and for bringing international recognition to Trinidad and Tobago.
Ms Campbell, who currently trains at the UCI World Cycling Centre (WCC) in Agile, Switzerland, made history at the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games in July, where she copped four (4) medals; three (3) bronze and one (1) gold in the Scratch, the Omnium, the individual pursuit and the road race respectively.
At only twenty-one years old, she has become the first female Double Caribbean Women’s Road Champion, the first female CAC Gold Medal cyclist and the first female cyclist to receive The Hummingbird Medal - Silver. In addition to her recent success at the CAC games, Teneil also successfully competed in several meets across Belgium, France, Norway, Thailand and the Netherlands.
Minister Cudjoe commented that “this is the ideal time to showcase what an outstanding athlete and inspirational young woman Teneil is, given the TTOC’s ongoing ‘Future is Female’ campaign.” She sees Teneil as “inspiring young women and girls to become more involved in sport while making Trinidad and Tobago proud.”
