Minister Haji Kazim Hosein is calling on all Municipal Corporations to intensify clean-up efforts to ensure timely collection of bulk waste as citizens prepare for the festival of lights, Divali.

Minister Hosein encourages all Municipal Corporations to adopt a whole-of-corporation approach to this clean-up exercise saying, “During the Divali to Christmas period, there are many persons cleaning their homes and getting rid of unwanted items, therefore it is important that the Corporations work closely with the burgesses to ensure that garbage is not left on the pavement or roadways for a lengthy time so that it becomes a hazard. This must be a coordinated effort and the corporations must communicate with the public so that the collection days and times for bulk/white waste pick-up are clearly identified for proper deployment of equipment and labour.”

Members of the public are kindly encouraged to contact their respective Municipal Corporation for assistance in tackling overgrown lots, removal of derelict vehicles, dilapidated and ruinous buildings, disposal of bulk and white waste, and clearing of drains and watercourses. This ‘Divali to Christmas Clean-Up’ is not a one and done initiative but will continue into the New Year, fostering continuity, sustainability, and collaboration among all Municipal Corporations, state agencies, such as the Community Based Environmental Protection and Enhancement and Enhancement Programme (CEPEP) and the Solid Waste Management Company Limited (SWMCOL), and the burgesses.

The Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government remains committed to creating cleaner, healthier and safer communities for all citizens across our beloved country.
