The Minister of Communications, the Honourable Stuart R. Young, M.P., joins the calypso fraternity and the rest of the national community in mourning the loss of Winston Scarborough known as “The Original De Fosto Himself.”
In extending condolences to the family of “The Original De Fosto Himself”, Minister Young said Trinidad and Tobago has lost another cultural ambassador within days of saying farewell to the Mighty Shadow.
“De Fosto” as he was also known died earlier today at his home. He had been ill for some time but was well enough to attend the funeral service of Shadow on Tuesday (October 30th).
Said Minister Young: “He was an exemplar to us as to how to thrive despite less than ideal circumstances at a young stage in life. De Fosto found the thing he loved, excelled at it and became a household name in Trinidad and Tobago. He can be considered one of our cleverest composers.”
De Fosto was a favourite of steelpan arrangers, many of whom used a lot of his songs for Panorama.
“He definitely brought his own flavour to the genre. We’re indebted to him for his contribution to calypso and Trinidad and Tobago,” Minister Young said.
