Ministry of Planning and Development makes donation to the VITAS House Hospice

The Ministry of Planning and Development presented Ms. Lilia Mootoo, General Manager of the Vitas House Hospice, with hampers containing adult briefs, bed liners, gloves, wipes and other neede supplies.

The staff of the Ministry raised funds for the hospice through the sale of pink ribbons to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month. During the month of October, staff members of the Ministry also took department pictures wearing pink garments in solidarity for breast cancer patients. A collage of these department pictures were also presented to the hospice om on 5th November, 2018,

Breast cancer awareness month is an annual campaign intended to educate persons about Cancer and the importance of early screening and treatment. This campaign starts on October 1st and ends on October 31st every year.

The Vitas House Hospice is a subsidiary of the Trinidad and Tobago Cancer Society governed by its own Board of Directors. It is a free service offered to and accessible to all terminally ill cancer patients who have exhausted medical resources and have a life expectancy of six (6) months or less.

The Vitas House Hospice opened its doors in a completely renovated building made available by the North West Regional Health Authority (NWRHA) at the St. James Medical Complex in October 2009. It is a twelve (12) bed facility that offers 24 hour medical and nursing care, seven (7) days a week.

The Vitas House Hospice team are dedicated to caring for terminally ill cancer patients. The belief that “no-one should die alone” is an important part of hospice care and one embraced completely by Vitas House Hospice personnel. “You matter because of who you are. You matter at the last moment of your life, and we will do all we can, not only to help you die peacefully, but also live until you die.” (Dame Cecily Saunders
