The Ministry of Education is assuring teachers, students and parents of the ASJA Primary School in San Fernando that the school was thoroughly cleaned and sanitised based on guidelines given by the Ministry of Health. Following claims of an outbreak of hand, foot and mouth disease at the school earlier this week, Public Health Officials visited and instructed School Supervisors and the Principal to clean and sanitise the classrooms.

Ministry of Health officials advised that based on their assessment, spraying of the compound is not necessary and the school can continue to function as normal. Meanwhile, the San Fernando Borough Corporation will provide additional support to the principal this weekend to clean and sanitise the compound.

Parents and teachers expressed fear last week of an outbreak of hand, foot and mouth disease at the school after three (3) students fell ill and were treated for vomiting and diarrhea. School Supervisors from the Victoria Education District Office, in collaboration with the school’s principals, invited parents to a meeting where Public Health Officials advised them on the situation.

Meanwhile, the Charlieville ASJA Girls’ College reopened on Friday 30th November, 2018 after the school was sprayed, cleaned and sanitised by Insect Vector Control Officers. The school was closed on Monday 26th November, 2018 after the school’s janitor died from Pulmonary Tuberculosis. The employee was previously hospitalised and was being treated for the disease.
