On Sunday December 9, 2018, children of staff members at the Ministry of Social Development and Family Services gathered with children of the Cascade School for the Deaf for a Children’s Christmas Party hosted by the Ministry. The event, now in its second year, was held at the Ministry’s Inter Disciplinary Child Development Centre, De Gannes Street in Couva.
Funded by the staff at the Ministry, who also donated toys for underprivileged children, a total of sixty children were treated to games, eats and drinks, as well as a story telling segment, courtesy NALIS. Santa Claus handed out early Christmas presents to children, and he also took the opportunity to pose for photos with toddlers and youngsters alike. A special ‘thank you’ in song was rendered by the Children of the Cascade School for the Deaf to a very appreciative Santa.
Permanent Secretary at the Ministry, Jacinta Bailey Sobers, during her brief welcome remarks, told the gathering to focus on the true meaning of Christmas and that it is not the things we do around Christmas that counts but those Christmas things we do throughout the year that really matters.
She indicated that the Ministry was pleased to welcome and host the children at the Cascade School for the Deaf. She encouraged all to approach the new year with optimism and hope, despite the ills which were taking place around us and said that she always looks forward to this simple but meaningful event where children of staff members get the opportunity to interact, play and share with those who are less fortunate. She ended by extending a happy and holy Christmas to all present.
