May 10, 2016: The Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking Programme is a new initiative aimed at ensuring young Tobagonians are aware of the pitfalls of substance abuse and illegal drugs.
The project falls under the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Programme (ADAPP) Unit of the Division of Health and Social Services, Tobago House of Assembly. The Division’s Assistant Secretary, Sheldon Cunningham, said the project will begin on June 26.
Cunningham said the Division continues to look for ways to engage those who are most vulnerable to minimise the instances of substance abuse.
“We have been doing work with the young people in terms of drugs and drug use, and the effects of drugs on our young people, and we are trying our best to come up with other programmes,” he said.
Cunningham is also asking the public to support the Division’s efforts by attending meetings and putting forward ideas to support this initiative.
He also commended ADAPP staff for its hard work, saying that “some of them are in the community and the schools; they’ve been in the community trying to talk to persons.”
Further acknowledging some of the ground work being put in by the unit Cunningham stated that at “Carnival you would have seen them trying to hand out cards on how much [alcohol] you’re supposed to consume and those kinds of things.”
