Minister of National Security the Honourable Stuart R. Young M.P. is expressing grave concern for the increasing prevalence of genderbased violence, including violence committed with small arms.
Minister Young’s concern came while he addressed the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace, Disarmament and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean (UNLIREC) Sub-Regional Seminar entitled "Preventing Armed Violence Against Women Through Arms Control", which was held on November 26, 2019 at the Hyatt Regency Trinidad Hotel in Port of Spain.
The National Security Minister also strongly condemned the increasing rate of non-partner violence against women. He emphasized the need to identify and prosecute persons from all levels of society, inclusive of those who hold high positions and pretend to be exemplars when they are nothing but cowards who abuse women.
The Minister urged the seminar participants to continue to move towards a progressive convergence of women, peace and security, and emphasized the need for an all hands on deck approach in order to eradicate violence against women and girls in Trinidad and Tobago.
