March 16, 2016: The Honourable Anthony Garcia, Minister of Education, officially opened the 29th Edition of the MILO West Games at the Hasely Crawford Stadium before thousands of school athletes, teachers, principals and parents on Tuesday 15ht march, 2016.
Twenty nine (29) schools participated in the competition which is an annual sports event designed to assist in the selection of young track and field talent at the primary school level, to represent Trinidad and Tobago in future athletic competitions.
In making his remarks, Minister Garcia praised the young athletes for their delightful performance during the march past. He said, “I want to congratulate those students who participated in the march past. I know that there was a lot of work that went into your presentation and you did splendidly this morning. To your teachers and those who assisted you in this preparation, I want to say how happy we are and how thankful we are. Your efforts to prepare these students in particular to ensure the precision of the marches would have required a high degree of discipline.”
Minister Garcia also urged the athletes to do their best in their respective sporting events, whether or not they win, since it is about their sincerity to earn glory for their schools and themselves.
He said, “To all those who will be participating today, I want to wish you well and as Mr. Griffith said in his prayer, there is a joy in winning. Let us let that joy be also associated with losing because in the final analysis, the effort is more important than the result. I would also like to thanks the sponsors for contributing to the success of these Games.
Also in attendance at the opening ceremony was the Minister of State in the Ministry of Education the Honourable Dr. Lovell Francis and other MOE officials.
