July 25, 2016: The Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, the Honourable Darryl Smith, will visit participants of the Basilon Street Youth Camp, on Tuesday July 26 from 10:00am at the Basilon Street Youth Facility, Basilon Street, Port-of-Spain. The visit to the Youth Camp entitled Camp VIBE 2016, will be the Minister’s first to the Youth Facility, following the Ministry’s re-alignment in September 2015.
Camp VIBE, which runs from 18th to 29th July 2016, was first hosted by the Youth Division in 1985 in recognition of International Youth Year and has since become a major instrument for the engagement of young people in more than nine districts across the country. The camp seeks to develop, the qualities of citizenship, volunteerism and national pride and to promote personal, community and national development within young people between the ages of twelve to seventeen years old.
As embodied by its theme - “Resilience, Recreation and Recycling”- this year’s camp aims to address the economic and social challenges which threaten national development. To this end, each of the seventy camp participants, will gain exposure to recreational gardening, craft, sporting activities and water and life safety. They will also receive life skills training encompassing: personal development strategies, team building, leadership, anger management and communication skills.
Members of the Media are invited to cover the Minister’s visit to the Basilon Street Youth Camp.
