September 9, 2016: The Ministry of National Security has launched an investigation into the attempted break-in at the Immigration Detention Centre (IDC), Eastern Main Road, Aripo, on Wednesday, 7th September 2016 by armed men.

An initial report indicates that security personnel at the IDC saw the two persons attempting to enter the premises of the IDC via the South-Eastern end of the outer perimeter fence of the Centre.

The report noted that the Detention Centre Officers who were on duty, sought to intercept the men who opened fire upon the officers who in turn returned fire. No one was injured during the exchange of gunfire.

The two armed suspects then fled the scene.  A Joint search was conducted by the Detention Centre Officers and officers of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service’s Northern Division Task Force, however the search proved futile. However during the search of the area wire cutting tools were retrieved.

Following the incident, additional security arrangements were immediately implemented at the Centre.

The matter is being investigated by the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service.
