September 16, 2016: Improving south-south cooperation in Trinidad and Tobago and CARICOM was at the center of a meeting with the Costa Rican Chargé d'Affaires, Ms. Carmen Gil Erazo. The meeting was hosted on September 16, 2016 by the Minister of Planning and Development, the Honourable Camille Robinson-Regis on behalf of the Ministry of Planning and Development at their Port-of-Spain Head Office.
Also present were Deputy Permanent Secretary, Ms. Beverly Khan; Ms. Adrianna Sharpe, Head of the Technical Cooperation Unit (Ag.); and other members of the Ministerial team.
The meeting was part of a platform for dialogue aimed at fostering deeper technical cooperation between the two countries and generating ideas for future cooperative opportunities within the wider Caribbean.
Mrs. Gil Erazo and the Ministerial team spoke on several areas including cooperation along the lines of the sustainable development goals and national policy as well as climate change adaptation best practice exchange and looking at ways to improve management of coastal and marine environments.
Discussions also centered on technical cooperation for waste management, sustainable agricultural practices and a Spanish immersion programme for members of the public service. More importantly the Ministry was deeply interested in learning how to enhance the eco-tourism sector along the lines of coffee and cocoa.
In closing, the Ministry of Planning and Development pledged to being working on a proposal to present to the Costa Rican Embassy on specific areas of interest for technical cooperation.
