September 29, 2016: The Trinidad and Tobago Music Company Limited (MusicTT) recently hosted journalists and bloggers to an exclusive session to discuss issues facing the local music industry. This discussion was the first of its kind and allowed members of the media fraternity to inform the direction of national strategic action plan for the local music industry as well as meet and interact with a team of researchers from Sound Diplomacy, the UK-based firm selected to spearhead the development of the music industry’s five-year action plan.

General Manager of MusicTT, Jeanelle Frontin, urged, “You [the media] have been the ones hearing, writing and sharing the stories of the trials and successes of our music industry. You are therefore a critical contributor and can play a unique key role in shaping the perspective of the Sound Diplomacy team and preparing them for the engagement with industry stakeholders which takes place over the next seven months.”

Collaboration, information sharing and mentoring among artists, educational opportunities, policy development and implementation, public-private sector partnerships and financial literacy are just some of the topics raised and discussed by the media. From a broad perspective, this strategic action plan is essential to guiding the future direction of the local industry consistent with the needs of the country. It will not only provide Trinidad and Tobago’s music industry with a competitive advantage, that is, uncover penetrable areas in the international market and guide the sales, marketing, distribution efforts and ensure maximum impact of and revenue for our local talent but will also assist in the business development of all stakeholders within the local music industry and maximize the longevity and sustainability of music businesses.

As the company charged with stimulating and facilitating the business development and export activities of the music industry, MusicTT is eager to work with Sound Diplomacy, and most importantly its stakeholders in order to ensure the development and implementation of this national strategic action plan. Determining the future for the local music industry begins with input from all persons - industry professionals, media, stakeholders and the target market. “We chose to begin this critical strategic exercise in this way as we believe it is imperative for Sound Diplomacy to get a deep snapshot of our culture and our music industry’s distinctive issues directly from the stakeholders. Further to this, we will be ensuring that there are widely circulated online surveys and calls/interviews with all the music/music-related organizations, associations, influential stakeholder groups and representatives of various relevant entities,” Frontin added.

As such, MusicTT is inviting all music stakeholders to attend an engagement session at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday October 1st, 2016 that will determine the future of the local music industry. Stakeholders will meet with Sound Diplomacy to share valuable information on the state of the industry and to chart a course for growth and development. This session takes place at CLR James Auditorium, Cipriani College of Labour and Co-Operative Studies.
