October 18, 2016: Tobago fisherfolk have been armed with more training in fish handling and fish processing. The Division of Agriculture, Marine Affairs, Marketing, and the Environment (DAMME) continues to train fishermen in the areas of fish handling and fish processing.
This training benefits the fishermen and keeps produce safe for customer’s consumption. “We would have completed two series of training programmes, one at the Argyle Community Centre and one at the Pigeon Point Fish Facility,” DAMME Assistant Secretary, Hayden Spencer, said during the weekly Post Executive Council media briefing. “It would have been fully attended by the fisherfolk.”
Spencer added: “One of the two areas of training (was) safety and sanitary measures on fishing vessels, and safety and sanitary measures at the fish facility,” Spencer said. “We have more programmes
planned [for] Charlotteville, Castara, and Lambeau,” he said. Spencer said work on the Castara Fishing Facility is slated to begin “within two weeks.”
The project manager for the facility will be National Maintenance Training and Security Company Limited (MTS).
