November 24, 2016:

The installation of long-awaited street lights on Casia Boulevard, Gentian Park, Edinburgh South, Chaguanas is expected to significantly improve the safety of residents of the Housing Development Corporation community. The lights were commissioned yesterday evening (November 23) by the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC), in response to residents’ security concerns. It was one of the highlights during a busy week for T&TEC. Four new lighting installations were successfully commissioned at facilities in east and central by Wednesday and another four will be completed today. At the end of the week, thousands of citizens will benefit from the upgrades.

The Minister of Trade and Industry, Senator the Honourable Paula Gopee-Scoon and T&TEC’s Chairman, Mr. Keith Sirju were on hand to deliver the lights to the happy residents of Gentian Park, several of whom stopeed to thank T&TEC for the lights.

The evening before, on November 22nd, T&TEC took the illumination brigade to east Trinidad, where three facilities had lighting upgrades. The evening culminated with a ceremony at the Samaroo Village Recreation Ground, where the Minister of Public Utilities, the Honourable Fitzgerald Hinds; MP for D’Abadie/O’Meara, Brigadier General (Retired) Ancil Antoine; and T&TEC’s Chairman, Mr. Sirju met with and addressed the residents. The party had earlier switched on the lights to the nearby Samaroo Village Basketball Court at Mootoo Lands.

Speaking to the residents, Minister Hinds issued a call to the area’s youth to use the lights for their well-being and upliftment, and warned of the ramifications should they misuse or destroy the valuable infrastructure. Mr. Sirju agreed, saying that these projects “clearly serve your respective communities and when put to maximum use can certainly open up opportunities for all.” He also took the opportunity to speak of several new T&TEC initiatives and upgrades conducted in response to the growing needs of the population of east Trinidad, to improve the reliability of their electricity supply.

Prior to the events in Samaroo Village, the lights to the Carib Homes Play Park in Arima were delivered to residents by the contingent. T&TEC will close the week of illuminations this evening with a sod-turning ceremony to begin the installation of lights at the Hasely Crawford Stadium Training Grounds and the hand-over of three lighting installations in Marabella and Cocoyea, south Trinidad.
