December 2, 2016: Senator the Honourable Rohan Sinanan, Minister of Works and Transport has assured residents of Matelot and environs that relief will be delivered to the area affected by heavy rainfall, following continuous road works which will be conducted over the upcoming weekend. The Hon. Minister gave the assurance following a tour of the area on Thursday 1st December, 2016 where he assessed the depth of damage to the roads and properties due to flooding and landslides in the area.

Following his assessment, Minister Sinanan acknowledged that a lot of road works still has to be done in the area but assured residents that the Ministry of Works and Transport will work tirelessly to ensure that the area returns to some sense of normalcy by Sunday.

“T&TEC has just informed us that by tonight (yesterday) Grande Rivere will get back their electricity and by Saturday, Matelot will be back on. So the idea now is to bring immediate relief to the villages and get in food, other essential items and water,” he said.

The Bridges, Landslips and Traffic Management Unit of the Ministry of Works and Transport has been deployed to clear the channels of Bridge B1/69 located along the main road into Matelot and to replace the destroyed bridge with a 60 ft. modular bridge over the next 24 hours.

Minister Sinanan was accompanied on the tour by Senator the Honourable Kazim Hosein, Minister of Rural Development and Local Government, Mrs. Glenda Jennings Smith, Member of Parliament for Toco/Sangre Grande, and Mr. Terry Rondon , Chairman of the Sangre Grande Regional Corporation.
