December 9, 2016: On Thursday December 8, Dr the Honourable Nyan Gadsby-Dolly presented a rubric for Calypso Adjudication to Everald Snaggs, Chairman of TUCO's Adjudication Committee.
This report presents the key findings from the Calypso Developmental Adjudication Workshop held at the UTT Campus at the National Academy for the Performing Arts from October 25-27, 2016. It also provides recommendations for the further development of new and potential adjudicators, Arts Management training for the organization and Artist development. The Adjudication Workshop was facilitated by the Ministry of Community Development, Culture and the Arts in collaboration with TUCO aimed at developing a cadre of adjudicators to enhance TUCO’s calypso competitions for 2017 and beyond.
In delivering the feature address, Minister Gadsby-Dolly stated that the Ministry was happy to partner with TUCO and was committed to supporting and developing the calypso art form. She stressed the importance of calypso adjudication in setting the mark and maintaining the standard of calypso while underscoring the need for training and development for our junior artists and cultural practitioners so that we can have high calibre artists in the Caribbean region. Minister Gadsby-Dolly also announced that the Ministry is currently in discussions with the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) to develop training and development courses for the art form such as calypso writing, singing and other areas of this most important aspect of our culture.
President of TUCO, Lutalo Masimba expressed gratitude, saying that TUCO was extremely thankful that the Ministry saw the importance of working with the organization on projects such as these. While recognizing that this was one step forward, he further requested the Ministry’s assistance in expanding the pool of adjudicators through its various agencies such as regional Carnival Committees and Community Development Administrative Districts.
Also present at the presentation ceremony were Angela Edwards, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry; Beverly Reid-Samuel, Deputy Permanent Secretary; Shirlane Hendrickson, General Secretary of TUCO; Andre Augustus, Cultural Programme Coordinator of the Ministry and Steve Pascall, Public Relations Officer of TUCO.
