The Minister of Rural Development and Local Government Kazim Hosein is in Bamboo Village, Cedros this morning to get a firsthand look at the destruction caused by coastal erosion yesterday (February 26th). The Minister of National Security Major General (Ret'd) Edmund Dillon and officials of Office of the Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) are expected to join him.
The Siparia Regional Corporation Disaster Management Unit (DMU) indicated that five houses and a number of families have been affected but all families were assessed and opted to stay with their relatives until the issue is resolved.
The corporation’s DMU, Trinidad and Tobago Fire Services as well as the councillor for the area, Shankar Teelucksingh visited the area last evening and returned this morning (February 27th) to monitor the situation in efforts to ensure the safety of the villagers.
It is estimated that a large portion of the road has been lost to the ocean and a number of homes remain under threat. Teelucksingh said officials from the Coastal Protection Unit of the Ministry of Work and Transport and T&TEC are also in the area assisting families. The Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government will continue to provide updates on the situation during the day.
