The Metal Industries Company Limited (MIC), Institute of Technology launched a Battery Regeneration Project and Green-Tec Facility at MIC-IT Technology Centre, Penal on Thursday March 1st, 2018.
This innovative portable device, the Ion Hammer (Trade Mark), regenerates spent Used Lead Acid Batteries (ULAB) at a commercially viable rate, optimising waste resource use while mitigating environmental contamination. The project is collaboration between MIC-IT and ProtoFabTT
MIC Limited is an agency under the Ministry of Education with responsibility for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and the students involved in this Battery Regeneration Project have completed their secondary education and are registered in the MIC “Journeyman Programme.” This programme is part of MIC’s trust to promote Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and it attracts young people with an interest for innovative projects.
Speaking at the launching ceremony, Dr. the Honourable Lovell Francis, Minister of State in the Ministry of Education praised the local inventor and MIC for the collaboration. He said, “we consume batteries produced elsewhere and when they run out, we buy more batteries, but if we have a local invention, where you recycle batteries, so you add to their life, then you avoid that ecological disaster of dumping lead into your soil, and then instead of just being consumers, you become a producer of an invention that has economic value, then that is what diversification is about, that is what real development is about “
MIC-IT will initially offer service level agreements on a business to business arrangement for battery regeneration, to firms in need of predictive and preventative maintenance for their battery asserts. The rebranded batteries will be made available for retail to the public, thereby reducing the cost for vehicle maintenance.
The project is one example of MIC-IT’s thrust for economic diversification, foreign currency exchange generation and environmentally sustainable benefits to the nation. This home grown technology has the potential to become a global scale business with established customer interests worldwide.
