April 26, 2016: The Honourable Maxie Cuffie, M.P., Minister of Public Administration and Communications cordially invites members of the news media to the 'CELEBRATING THE MERIKINS' event taking place on Thursday 28th April, 2016 at 6:00 p.m.
The event will take place at the National Archives of Trinidad and Tobago, #105 St. Vincent Street, Port of Spain.
As the line Minister for the National Archives of Trinidad and Tobago (NATT), the Hon. Maxie Cuffie,will deliver the Feature Address at this event which will also include remarks from Mr. Khafra Kambon, Chair, Emancipation Support Committee; Ms. Akilah Jaramogi, Director, Merikins Heritage Foundation; Dr. Heather Cateau, Dean, The University of the West Indies and Ms. Maureen Warner-Lewis, Professor, The University of the West Indies, Mona.

NATT will launch its commemoration of the International Decade for people of African Descent (2015-2024) by celebrating the 200th anniversary of the arrival of the Merikins. The Merikins settled in the Company Villages in South Trinidad and are the descendants of former African-American slaves from the Southern USA who fought for the British during the British-American war of 1812-1814 in exchange for their freedom.
