The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) cancelled the Adverse Weather Alert on Tuesday 14th August, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. The TTMS has advised that the most intense activity due to the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) has passed. However, a few lingering showers are expected. Flood waters will gradually subside in areas currently experiencing street/flash flooding.
Citizens are advised to continue to monitor weather conditions and to maintain a state of preparedness.
As a result of adverse weather conditions across several parts of Trinidad and Tobago, there were numerous reports of flooding in six (6) Municipal Corporations. The Municipalities impacted by the adverse weather include the Couva/Tabaquite/Talparo Regional Corporation, San Juan/Laventille Regional Corporation, Port of Spain City Corporation, Penal/Debe Regional Corporation, Tunapuna/ Piarco Regional Corporation and the Diego Martin Regional Corporation.
The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM), as the lead coordinator of Disaster Risk Management, remains in contact with the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government and other first responder and support agencies to ensure immediate assistance can be rendered if called upon due to inclement weather conditions.
Reports to the ODPM indicate that the inclement weather impacted the following areas:
Port-of-Spain City Corporation– There were numerous reports of street flooding in the Port of Spain area and environs, including Independence Square; South Quay; Upper Edward Street; St. Vincent Street; Sackville Street and Downtown Port of Spain.
Couva/Tabaquite/Talparo Regional Corporation - There were reports of flooding within the following areas: Sum Sum Hill; Soledad; Windsor Park; Phoenix Park; Macaulay; Gasparillo; Mayo; Williamsville; Derry Lane; Gran Couva; Caparo and Mamoral.
San Juan/Laventille Regional Corporation – There were reports of street flooding within the following areas: the Eastbound lane of the Beetham Highway; Morvant Junction; Barataria Roundabout; 10th Avenue, Barataria between the Main Road and the Priority Bus Route; Boundary Road, San Juan; Aranguez Main Road; Eastern Main Road, Champs Fleurs near RBC Royal Bank, Republic Bank, Unilever and opposite Carib Brewery.
There were also reports of landslides in the Morvant/Laventille area and the St Francois Valley Road, Belmont.
Penal/Debe Regional Corporation – There were reports of flooding within the following areas: Papourie Road, Lower Barrackpore; Digity Road, Lower Barrackpore; Lalbeharry Branch #2; Carat Hill, Barrackpore and Hill Piece, Philippines.
Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation – There was one report of street flooding observed at Flamingo Street, Trincity.
Diego Martin Regional Corporation – There were reports of street flooding on the Diego Martin Highway in the vicinity of KFC.
The Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government has reported that the Disaster Management Units in affected areas are responding to reports and are in the field to collect reports and support in initial damage assessments. All fourteen (14) Disaster Management Units are in a state of readiness to respond to the concerns of the public. The ODPM stands ready to support the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government in its incident response.
The ODPM reminds all citizens if impacted by the adverse weather to contact the respective Municipal Corporation or the Tobago Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) through its toll-free hotline numbers.
