May 20, 2016: The recently concluded 2015-2016 cruise season is “one of the most successful” in Tobago’s history. This according to the Acting Chief Secretary and Secretary of Tourism and Transportation, Tracy Davidson-Celestine, who estimated that it would have brought in over $50 million.

“During that season” the Secretary  explained, “we had approximately 106,000 persons that would have come ashore,” she said. “…This is the most number of passengers to ever visit Tobago on cruise-ships and the growth in the sector has continued.”

The Secretary said passengers spent on average “at least US74 a day and that does not include the amount spent by the crew [of ships] as well.”

She added: “I’m pleased that there was a trickle-down effect and so you find that quite a bit of monies went to the smallman- the maxi and the taxi drivers, the restaurateurs, the craft vendors, the street vendors, those who are renting bicycles, and those who have bars, and so on.”

David-Celestine indicated that on average, 250 to 300 passengers flew to Tobago every two weeks via chartered flight to join the cruise ships from the Port of Scarborough.
