July 28, 2016: The Honourable Anthony Garcia, Minister of Education pledges to revitalise the Global Learning & Observation to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) Programme in secondary schools in Trinidad and Tobago. The commitment was made at a ceremony to mark GLOBE Trinidad and Tobago 20th Anniversary at PLIPDECO House, Point Lisas Industrial Estate on Wednesday 27th July, 2016.

Minister Garcia said, “I propose to meet with the GLOBE Partners at the earliest opportunity to discuss how the Ministry of Education can develop an action plan in collaboration with all GLOBE Partners so we can see not only one school benefiting from the GLOBE initiative, but as many schools in Trinidad and Tobago.”
This is an international science and education programme that provides students and members of the public, the opportunity to participate in data collection and the scientific process, and contribute meaningfully to the understanding of the Earth System and global environment.

According to Minister Garcia, the GLOBE Programme fits tightly into government’s thrust to provide quality education, especially with its STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Initiative. He is confident that the GLOBE Programme can be used to improve students’ performance in Mathematics and Science.
Citing the Brazil Secondary School as an example, Minister Garcia said the GLOBE Programme also has the potential to effect positive behavioral changes and can curtail violence and indiscipline among students, “I am sure that when we inculcate the GLOBE Programme into our education system, we will succeed in having a positive effect on indiscipline, or the lack of discipline and violence in our schools.”

The Education Minister praised the GLOBE Programme Trinidad & Tobago, PLIPDECO and other sponsors for keeping the initiative relevant and alive in our schools.
The GLOBE Partner Project, which exists in one hundred and seventeen countries worldwide, was first introduced to Trinidad and Tobago in July 1996, with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Governments of Trinidad and Tobago and the United States of America.
