August 22, 2016: A new award will be named in honour of MacArtha Lewis, most famously known as Calypso Rose.
The Veteran Calypsonian met with Chief Secretary Orville London on August 19 at the Office of the Chief Secretary, Administrative Complex, Calder Hall.
London told “Queen Rose”, as he called her, that Tobago is proud of her achievements.
“I think you’re achieving more, doing more work, having a greater impact now than any other time in your life,” London told the singer. He added that the THA has established a new award in her honour, the Calypso Rose Award. The Award will include a cash award towards furthering the personal development of a deserving cultural artiste.
Rose called for more youth to be exposed to the arts.
“We have our culture,” Rose said. “Bring the artistes, put them in the schools and let them teach the kids our culture, because our culture is very important in Trinidad and Tobago. Look where I am today.”
