August 23, 2016: ST. AUGUSTINE, Trinidad and Tobago– The Portuguese and Brazilian Studies Section, Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics at The UWI St. Augustine, in conjunction with the Department of Creative and Festival Arts, presents the fundraiser A Alma Brasileira – The Brazilian Soul. The musical celebration, hosted and under the auspices of the Embassy of Brazil, will commemorate Brazil’s Independence and 100 years of samba and takes place on September 7 (Brazilian Independence Day) at 6:30 p.m. at the Central Bank Auditorium in Port-of-Spain.

Experience samba classics interpreted through featured soloists including Candice Alcantara, Devon Seale, Gerelle Forbes, Heather MacIntosh and Marlon de Bique. They will be joined by a live band led by Musical Director Anthony Woodroffe Jr, as well as by guest musicians Tamba Gwindi, percussionist, and Marcus Santos on the pandeiro from Bahia, Brazil. The spirit of samba continues with dances by the Wilson & Co Dance Troupe, and there will be capoeira performances by Acanne and Volta Miúda. Tickets cost $250 and can be reserved by calling 868-383-9592, 868-299-8543 or 868-384-7205.

The event was designed by the staff of the Portuguese and Brazilian Studies Section of the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics who offer the Minor in Portuguese and Brazilian Studies. Dr Jo-Anne Ferreira, Senior Lecturer in Linguistics and Coordinator of the Undergraduate Portuguese and Brazilian Studies programme said, “The Minor in Brazilian Studies programme is fairly young, only three years old, within the older Portuguese Language programme dating to 1987. The Section is a small team, with only one full-time Instructor post, trying earnestly to increase awareness of the relevance of Brazilian culture and the Portuguese language nationally and in the region. The funds provided by this event will be used for funding academic and co-curricular activities for students in the Section and for our Secondary Schools Outreach programme over the next academic year.”
