September 22, 2016: The Central Statistical Office is pleased to announce the release of the Index of Retail Prices for the month of August 2016. The information is based on data collected in the survey of retail prices during the month of August 2016.
Index of Retail Prices
The All Items Index of Retail Prices calculated from the prices collected for the month of August 2016 was 104.9, representing an increase of 0.3 point or 0.3% above the All Items Index for July 2016 as shown in the table attached.
The Index for Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages increased from 110.7 in July 2016 to 111.2 in August 2016, reflecting an increase of 0.5%. Contributing significantly to this increase was the general upward movement in the prices of bodi; cereals; eddoes; pumpkin; fresh chicken; green sweet pepper; tomatoes; curry; oranges; and pasteurized milk.However, the full impact of these price increases was offset by the general decrease in the prices of fresh king fish; celery; dasheen; fresh cavalli; melongene; Irish potatoes; ochroes; culinary herbs and seasoning mix; cabbage; and parboiled rice.
A further review of the data for August 2016 compared with July 2016 reflected increases in the sub-indices for Clothing and Footwear of 1.1%, and Health of 1.7%.All other sections remained unchanged.
Inflation Rate
The Inflation Rate for August 2016 (measured as the percentage change in the Index for January to August 2016/January to August 2015) was 3.2% which was also recorded in the previous period (January to July 2016/January to July 2015). The Inflation Rate for the comparative period (January to August 2015/January to August 2014) was 5.6%.
