September 22, 2016: In keeping with the Government’s commitment to facilitate the growth and development of the local steel industry, Senator the Honourable Paula Gopee-Scoon, Minister of Trade and Industry met with the senior management of Nu-Iron Unlimited on Wednesday 21 September, 2016 and toured its facilities. Nu-Iron Unlimited is a wholly owned subsidiary of Nucor Corporation based in Charlotte, North Carolina, United States of America. They produce Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) which is melted and processed into steel. Nu-Iron Unlimited is the largest shipper of cold DRI in the world.
Senator Gopee-Scoon, in addressing its management and a cross section of employees during her visit, commended the team on its plant and operational efficiency, innovative spirit and good environmental steward practices. The Minister congratulated Nu-Iron on being a world class producer and number one globally in terms of quality. Mr. Michael Hess, General Manager, Nu Iron Unlimited said ‘we are very proud of what we have accomplished in our ten years of operations in Trinidad. Despite the challenging times in the steel industry the team has been able to thrive and improve its process and operations’.
Mr. Nigel Noel, Director Shipping and Mr. Russell Grannum, Engineering and Maintenance Manager delivered detailed presentations on the services, accomplishments and current challenges of Nucor Corporation. The presenters attributed the company’s success to its highly motivated, skilled and educated workforce; optimised efficiencies of its operations and careful examination of its raw materials.
