March 10, 2016: Despite calls for demolition of the old Sangre Grande Post Office in the newspapers dated (Sunday, May 17 2015- Newsday), (Monday, June 15 2009-Newsday) and (Tuesday June 16, 2015-Guardian), the Concerned Citizens of Sangre Grande supported by National Trust of Trinidad and Tobago which is part of the mandate of Ministry of Planning and Development, has managed to get TTPOST to agree to work with the community to clean the former Sangre Grande Post Office. Built in 1898, the building is older than all the Magnificent 7 buildings in Port of Spain.
TTPOST has been cooperative, and the community has been taking the lead in getting donations toward the project. The first step is to get the post office cleaned up as garbage such as old furniture, paper, and plastic etc. has accumulated. The homeless have also taken up residence at the site. In addition to its cleaning up, the plan is to secure the Post Office in the same day to ensure it is not re-inhabited by the homeless. The clean-up is spearheaded by the group of Concerned Citizens of Sangre Grande.
