November 22, 2016:

On Friday 18th November 2016, the Trinidad and Tobago Fashion Company Limited (FashionTT) hosted a meeting with its stakeholders to discuss the second draft of the business model for a Local Production Facility (LPF) that will put Trinidad and Tobago’s fashion industry at the forefront in garment manufacturing.

Raymond Wong, adjunct Professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and developer of the three-year business model for the facility, believes that successful application will position this establishment as a leader in domestic apparel manufacturing as well as a viable option for global marketing sourcing. This will in turn stimulate and facilitate business expansion and growth of the fashion industry in Trinidad and Tobago to generate national wealth.

In addition, the production facility will offer employment opportunities to persons with knowledge and expertise in various fields within the industry and provide local designers with a domestic manufacturing source for mass production in keeping with global standards. General Manager of FashionTT, Lisa-Marie Daniel stated, “The Local Production Facility is a landmark establishment for the fashion industry and, with the support of stakeholders, we can ensure that the provision of adequate resources for higher production levels which will give rise to an increase in exports and employment opportunities for those in the fashion industry.”

The facility is expected to be launched in the third quarter of the 2017 fiscal year and some of the staff categories that will be needed to efficiently operate the facility include:

  • Production Manager
  • Engineer/Mechanic
  • In-House Production Artist
  • Screen Printers
  • Sewing Operators
  • Sales Representatives

Creation of an internship program has also been proposed within the business model. The internship program will utilize students that are learning or participating in technical apparel design or manufacturing classes and will afford them the opportunity to gain knowledge on the operations of a manufacturing facility as well as gain hands-on experience for resume development. Interns may also benefit from full time employment once the internship cycle is completed in conjunction with an evaluation.
