March 13, 2017: Over the next five (5) years, employment opportunities in the agri-food sector are expected to increase by 15 percent across all regions.
Such was the enlightenment behind a three (3)-minute, video presentation co-ordinated by the staff of the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries, at a Career Day hosted by the Barataria South Secondary School on Friday 10th March, 2017.
The video clip's revelation of statistical data from developed countries such as Canada - which heralded agriculture as the third largest employer in that country - enabled students to better appreciate the vast range of career choices available within the sector.
Agricultural Assistant III, Mr. Dexter Samm - who led a team of staff from the Regional Administration North (RAN) Division - served as one of the facilitators at the Ministry's booth, as he conducted a series of 10-15 minute group discussions, each yielding insightful and resourceful feedback. His efforts were complimented by his Division's 4H Co-ordinator and Agricultural Assistant II (Ag.), Ms. Nina Khan, who emphasized to students that "agriculture was not just about food production but involved the collective input of science, engineering, finance, marketing, sales, logistics as well as food processing."
In addition to tokens and other promotional material, students interacting with the Ministry's booth, each received a comprehensive brochure outlining a variety of agricultural careers available locally, in addition to information on the requisite qualification(s) and experience.
The event - which was themed, "Discover the Possibilities 2" - garnered the participation of all the school's Forms as well as the support of other exhibitors, including the Ministry of Health; University of the West-Indies (UWI); University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT); Trinidad and Tobago Police Service and Air Guard; University of the Southern Caribbean (USC); National Energy Skills Centre (N.E.S.C); Cipriani College of Labour and Co-operative Studies (CCLCS); First Citizens Bank (FCB); Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC); One Caribbean Media House (Trinidad Express); Professional Airlines Training Solutions and MIC Institute of Technology.
