March 10, 2017:

The Honourable Stuart Young, Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister and Minister in the Ministry of the Attorney General and Legal Affairs, hosted the Post Cabinet Press Briefing today (Thursday 9th March, 2017) at the The Magdalena Grand Beach Resort, Lowlands Tobago.

Minister of Tourism, Shamfa Cudjoe announced Cabinet has taken a decision to dissolve the Tourism Development Company (TDC). The company will be replaced by two separate entities. One will focus on the Trinidad market while the other will focus on Tobago. The Minister said this has become necessary to give the Tobago House of Assembly the autonomy to market its destination.

The Minister said steps are being taken to develop a regulatory authority which will set basic standards for all tourism operators. Consultations with Barbados and Bahamas tourism authorities are ongoing on the establishment of this regulatory body.

Minister of Health, Terrence Deyalsingh announced that Cabinet has taken the decision to operationalise the United Nation’s report of 2013, which recommended the establishment of a state-of-the-art facility for a National Public Health Lab System. The facility will be built on nine acres of land in Valsayn near UTT Teachers' Training College.

Tobago House of Assembly, Chief Secretary, Kelvin Charles, discussed Cabinet’s decision to procure a cargo ferry to replace the Galicia. A request for tenders will be issued shortly for the purchase of the vessel.

Chief Secretary Charles said the Tobago Autonomy Bill and the issue of Tobago land titles were also discussed at Cabinet.
