March 21, 2017:
The Ministry of Social Development and Family Services (MSDFS) today commemorated World Social Work Day (WSWD) under the theme: “Promoting Community and Environmental Sustainability” with a series of activities at its Head office on St Vincent Street, Port of Spain.
Among the activities was an Open House at its Head Office where members of the public were invited to come in and find out about the programmes and services available at the Ministry, as well as access counselling services from some of the Social Workers who were on hand to receive them and provide necessary psychosocial support.
Persons visiting the Ministry also got the opportunity to find out about all that is required for a person to become a social worker. In her message to the staff at the Ministry, the Honourable Cherrie-Ann Crichlow-Cockburn, saluted the Social workforce at the Ministry in recognition of their contribution and commitment to addressing the social issues of our country.
Accordingly, she encouraged the social workers to “Be resolute in our commitment to work together to safeguard and build our families, communities and institutions, and to preserve our natural resources”.
The Ministry’s celebration also included a symbolic cutting of a Social Work Day Cake, and both staff and members of the public received cupcakes, pop corn and cotton candy as commemorative tokens on the occasion.
