May 19, 2016: The Tobago House of Assembly (THA) will today (May 19) discuss honouring late former Prime Minister and President, Arthur NR Robinson by way of a public monument.
Tobago-born Robinson, who died in 2014, was the only national to serve in both positions.
Assemblyman Claudia Groome-Duke, who is Leader of Assembly Business, will bring the motion to the House tomorrow.
The motion, which is listed on the Order Paper for the 44th plenary sitting of the Assembly, describes Robinson as “a pivotal figure in the struggle for Tobago’s autonomy, [who] eventually became the first chairman” of the restored THA.
It recalls that Robinson created the foundation for establishing the International Criminal Court (ICC).
“Whereas, there is no public monument nor sacred space to recognise and symbolise the achievements and contributions of this exemplary Tobagonian; be it resolved that a public monument be instituted at an appropriate location, as a focal point in memory” of his achievements and contributions.
The Motion further resolves that “the House mandate the Executive Council to pursue measures that will ensure that our heroes and icons are recognised in an effective and dignified manner”.
