May 25, 2016: There are many misconceptions surrounding cancer and according to Trinidad and Tobago Cancer Society (TTCS) clinic manager Sherma Mills-Serette, cancer advocacy and education has role in saving lives.

She was speaking last week at the Roxborough Health Clinic, one of the facilities where over 100 residents from Belle Garden, Roxborough, and Castara, came for cancer screening and education sessions. It’s one area Mills-Serrette believes will foster greater awareness and will also encourage the public to improve their health and lifestyles.

“Screening saves lives,” Serrette-Mills said. “We are seeing diseases, we are seeing younger persons being infected by this dreadful disease called cancer and we forgot that the old still applies, that prevention is better than cure.” Mills-Serrette is also encouraged by the response of the villagers attending the screenings.

“We’ve made partnerships, we forged friendships…so whether programmes like this continue for the future—and we really hope corporate T&T helps us—but we’ve made partnerships with persons we’ve never met before, so I think that this will continue.”
